International Sugar Forum begins in Cuba

More than 200 representatives from 17 nations are taking part, including Cuba, which contributes the majority, Germany, Austria, Colombia, Spain, France, Guatemala, India, Tanzania, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Sweden, Brazil, China, Peru, and Norway Canada .

Diversification 2022 will seek to contribute to the transformation of the sugar agribusiness based on the application of the government and innovation system, Mariela Gallardo, Director General of the Cuban Institute for Research on Sugar Cane Derivatives (Icidca), told Prensa Latina. .

It is a mixed event (in person and virtual) of scientific and commercial nature, which will examine the research results of the last years in terms of knowledge and the introduction of achievements in the production of sugar and derivatives, he added.

This first day will include the delivery of three keynote speeches, the first of which will be addressed by the Executive Director of the International Sugar Organization (OIA), Guatemalan José Orive

about new trends in the sugar sector.

The remaining two relate to sugar cane and the pandemic, what next? and Bioproducts, a circular economy approach aimed at agricultural sustainability in Cuba, to be presented by Manuel Enríquez Poy, Director General of the Motzorongo Group of Mexico, and Ana Nelis San Juan, Director of Biotechnology at Icidca.

According to the organizers, the topics that will guide the discussions include, in addition to human and animal nutrition, sugar cane cultivation, sugar technology and industrial equipment, research into renewable energy sources for the sugar industry and the development of derivatives (alcohols, rum, beverages and sorbitol) .

They also include derivatives of cellulosic fibers and lignin from sugar cane bagasse, bioproducts and organic fertilizers for agriculture, value chains and competitiveness of sugar and derivatives, climate change, and environmental and quality management.

The forum was originally planned for 2021 but was postponed due to the international and national situation that existed at the time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was preceded by three workshops on sugar cane varieties, seeds and plant health, agricultural expansion, organic products and a contribution to the biological struggle.

Its basic activities include a scientific event and a business forum

The Icidca, belonging to the Azcuba Business Group, has been organizing since 1983 these international meetings dedicated to topics related to sugar cane, its derivatives and by-products.
