Invasion of power centers in Brazil: Bolsonaro’s former justice minister arrested in Brasilia

Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice of Jair Bolsonaro, in charge of public security in Brasilia in the looting of Congress headquarters and other places of power by supporters of the ex-president six days ago, was arrested on Saturday for “omission” and “acquiescence”.

Anderson Torres returned to Brazil on Saturday after returning from vacation in Florida, where Jair Bolsonaro left to settle down in late December, two days before the inauguration of his successor Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, whose October presidential victory he refuses to recognize. Brazil’s Supreme Court decided on Friday to open an investigation into the far-right ex-president, who is suspected of “instigating and inspiring anti-democratic acts that culminated in vandalism and violence in Brasilia last Sunday,” lawyer Das shared the General Office in a statement.

“Public figures who continue to cowardly conspire against democracy by trying to impose a state of emergency must be held accountable,” warned Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is leading the investigation into the crimes. Riots committed by thousands of “Bolsonarists” in the capital on January 8.

Alexandre de Moraes ordered the arrest of former Minister Anderson Torres on Thursday. Director General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, considered that “the various omissions, presumably intentional, by these Federal District public security officers have contributed to the commission of terrorist attacks”.
