While iOS 17.2 is currently in beta, Apple is releasing an iOS 17.1.2 update that fixes security vulnerabilities in iOS 17.1.1 that are large enough to concern Apple. As reported by CBS, the Apple brand has started deploying this version, noting that “this update brings important security fixes and is recommended for all iPhone users.”
Bugs affecting web browsers
More specifically, the flaws affected WebKit, Apple’s rendering engine that web browsers on iOS, including Safari, must use. On its own support page, Apple goes into a little more detail and describes two problems in particular.
Due to one of the vulnerabilities, “Web content processing [pouvait] reveal sensitive information. Regarding the second concern, we can read that “processing web content may result in the execution of arbitrary code.”
In both cases, Apple states that it was “aware of a report indicating that this issue could be exploited with iOS versions prior to iOS 16.7.1.”
iOS 17.1.2 therefore fixes these two security vulnerabilities. The same goes for iPads, which are pushing the iPadOS 17.1.2 update for the same reasons.
Issues discovered by Google
“To protect our customers, Apple does not disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until an investigation has been conducted and patches or releases are available,” the Cupertino-based company said.
As a side note, it should be noted that the two vulnerabilities were discovered and reported by the Google Threat Analysis Group (TAG) teams.
