We’ve now gotten used to it: between the WWDC announcements in June and the release of the new iOS version, Apple omits a few functions. In fact, the first version of iOS 17, released with the iPhone 15, is not yet ready: some of the company’s promises will only arrive with intermediate versions. For example, iOS 17 has so far skipped Apple’s new Journal application. It wasn’t until the iOS 17.2 beta that users could start discovering it.
A journal application with AI?
The Journal app is a brand new app from Apple for iOS. It should allow you to document your daily life and keep your memories like a diary. You can add details about your day with photos, music or audio recordings.
It’s also one of Apple’s first apps that claims to use artificial intelligence to help you. So the Journal application can suggest saving specific memories based on your location, your photos, the music you listen to, or even your physical activity.
Apple is committed, the company promises, that these suggestions are based only on information stored on your device, without access from developers. This information is also encrypted and can only be unlocked using Face ID or Touch ID.
With its Journal application, Apple competes with similar applications that are already very popular in the App Store. Developers of the latter will be pleased to know that a new API has been implemented specifically for protocols. This allows apps to access the same reminders or add reminders to the Journal app.
iOS 17.2 is available as a developer beta. A public beta will be offered to all users soon.
