Eleven other people, including three minors, were sentenced to long prison terms, a justice spokesman told a news conference on Tuesday.
Adjamian killed by protesters?
The defendants were found guilty of involvement in the murder of Ruholla Adjamian in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, in early November. According to the indictment, Adjamian was killed by a group of mourners who had gathered to protest the killing of protester Hadis Nadjafi 40 days after his death. They stripped the 27-year-old, stabbed and beaten him. It was said that his naked body was then dragged through the streets.
Nadjafi was killed during protests in Iran that lasted more than two months after the death of young Kurd Mahsa Amini. Amini, 22, was arrested by the so-called morality police in Tehran because she allegedly wore her Islamic headscarf according to the rules. She died a short time later in the hospital. Activists blame the police for abusing Amini.
killed hundreds of people
According to official Iranian data, more than 300 people were killed in the protests, including dozens of members of the security forces. As a result of the violence during the protests, a total of eleven people have been sentenced to death in Iran, according to the latest verdict.
Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Guards arrested 12 suspected members of a group with ties to Europe, accused of planning acts of sabotage. Those arrested were “under the leadership of counterrevolutionary actors from Germany and the Netherlands” and carried out “activities against national security”, the pro-government Tasnim news agency reported, citing a statement by the Revolutionary Guards in the central Iranian province of Markazi, the southwest of Tehran. In this sense, the group would have tried to obtain weapons for “subversive acts”.
Referring to nationwide protests over the arrests, the statement said “Project Unrest has failed”. Protests have been raging in Iran for weeks. Online networks have called for a three-day strike starting Monday. The last day of the strike on Wednesday is also National Student Day. It is the anniversary of the killing of three opposition students by the shah’s police units in 1953. President Ebrahim Raisi is due to visit two universities in Tehran on Wednesday. Universities are among the scenes of the latest wave of protests.
