According to a report in the Wall Street Journal this Sunday (8), Iranian security forces helped Hamas plan the attack on Israel. According to the report, the Iranians gave Hamas permission to carry out the offensive at a meeting last Monday in Beirut, Lebanon (2).

This was the most violent attack on Israeli territory in 50 years.

The latest conflict between Israel and Hamas entered its second day this Sunday. According to the latest report from local authorities, at least 1,120 people died, 700 in Israel, 413 in the Gaza Strip and seven in the West Bank. Thousands of people were injured.

The confrontation began after Hamas carried out a surprise attack on Israeli territory on Saturday. 5,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip. Hamas gunmen entered Israeli territory, shot people on the streets of the region and kidnapped Israelis hostage.

Hamas is an armed extremist Islamic group that controls the Palestinian territory in the Gaza Strip, southwest of Israel.

The Wall Street Journal report attributes the information to people from Hamas and also the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard began working with Hamas to organize the attack in August.

According to the newspaper, the plan of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards is to threaten Israel on several fronts: in the north the Israelis would be attacked by Hezbollah, in the south and in the West Bank by Hamas and the Palestine Liberation Front

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has publicly commented on the attacks. He declared that “the Zionist regime will be eradicated at the hands of the Palestinian people and all resistance forces in the region.”

Hezbollah has already publicly supported Hamas

Also on Saturday, Hezbollah announced its support for the Hamassponsored attack against Israel and claimed to be in direct contact with leaders of resistance groups.

This Sunday there were attacks on northern Israel from Lebanon. These new bombings were claimed by Hezbollah, which claimed to have fired rockets in “solidarity” with the Palestinian people.

According to Hezbollah itself, the targets would be three Israeli military positions in a region called Shebaa Farms, which has been in Israelioccupied territory since 1967. This area is claimed by Lebanon.

Israeli forces said they retaliated against Hezbollah’s attack and that a drone hit a group post in the border region with Lebanon.

After the attack by Hamas militants, Israel declared war

Israeli forces also said they would continue operations in eight areas on the edge of the Gaza Strip in the south of the country. A complex allegedly used by Hamas intelligence was bombed in Gaza.

Hamas, for its part, released a statement saying its members continue to wage “fierce fighting” inside Israel.

The Israeli security cabinet made an official declaration of war against Hamas on Sunday. The measure makes official what Netanyahu had already announced, allowing the government to mobilize more reservists and step up the military response to the conflict.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on for decades. In its modern form, it dates back to 1947, when the United Nations (UN) proposed the creation of two states, one Jewish and one Arab, in Palestine under a British mandate.

The following year Israel was recognized as a state. Since then, there have been disputes over the territory and several agreements have attempted to establish peace in the region, but without success.
