Santiago Sánchez Cogedor, a football fan, walked from Alcalá de Henares, on the outskirts of Madrid, to Qatar in January 2022 to watch the World Cup, the opening match of which would take place on November 20th.

However, weeks before the sporting event began, the family stopped receiving any news.

In an Oct. 1 Instagram post documenting his trip, Santiago said he was in a village in northern Iraq and was about to enter Iran.

He then told his parents in an audio message on a television channel that he would first go to Tehran and then to the port of Bandar Abbas in the Strait of Hormuz to take a boat to Qatar.

Days later, the Spanish Foreign Ministry informed the tourist's family that he had been arrested, his mother Celia Cogedor told AFP in late October 2022.

A wave of protests erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22yearold KurdishIranian woman, on September 16, 2022, three days after she was arrested by moral police for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.

The Islamic Republic primarily accuses its archenemy, the USA, of being behind the wave of protests.

In this regard, at the end of September 2022, Iranian authorities announced that they had arrested nine foreigners, mainly from Poland, Italy and France, in connection with the protests.
