One of Iran’s most important filmmakers, Dariush Mehrjui, was stabbed to death on Saturday evening (14) along with his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar. According to the AFP agency, the crime occurred at the couple’s residence near Tehran (Iran).
The 83yearold filmmaker made “The Cow” in 1969, one of the first films of the new wave of Iranian cinema.
“During the preliminary investigation, we discovered that Dariush Mehrjui and Vahideh Mohammadifar were murdered with multiple stab wounds to the neck,” said the chief judge of Alborz province near Tehran, Husein FazeliHarikandi.
Recently, in an interview published by the Etemad newspaper, the filmmaker’s wife said she had received threats and her house had been robbed.
“The investigation revealed that no complaints were lodged regarding the illegal entry into the property of the Mehrjoui family and the theft of their property,” FazeliHarikandi added.
Between 1980 and 1985 the filmmaker stayed in France, where he shot “Voyage au pays de Rimbaud”. After his return to Iran, he triumphed at the box office with “The Tenants.”
In 1990, he made “Hamoun,” a comedy about 24 hours in the life of an intellectual plagued by his divorce and his intellectual concerns, in an Iran invaded by the technology companies Sony and Toshiba.
In the 1990s, Mehrjui also made portraits of women, including “Leila,” a melodrama about a barren woman who encourages her husband to marry a second wife.
