Iranian leadership threatens retaliation after IS attack

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the commander of the Revolutionary Guard threaten retaliation after the attack by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia. “We will meet you wherever you are”, said Major General Hossein Salami today at the funeral of the victims of the bomb attack for which radical Islamic IS claimed responsibility.

Almost a hundred people were killed on Wednesday in a ceremony commemorating the fourth anniversary of the death of the Revolutionary Guards' top commander, Qassem Soleimani, in his hometown of Kerman. Around 300 people were injured. ISIS said yesterday that two of its members carried out a suicide attack in the crowd using explosive belts.

“Our enemies can see the power of Iran and the entire world knows its strength and capabilities,” said President Raisi in a televised speech. “Our armed forces will decide the place and time of action.”

State television reported the funeral of the victims of the attack in Kerman. It showed images of a religious center where a dense crowd had gathered. Family members wept over the coffins of the dead draped in the Iranian flag. “Revenge, revenge,” demanded the mourners. They chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

The government in Tehran has repeatedly accused the US and Israel of supporting militant groups in attacks in the Islamic Republic.
