Irene Cara, ‘Fame’ Singer, Died at 63, Says Publicist

Irene Cara, the iconic voice behind the hit soundtracks “Fame” and “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” has died at the age of 63, her publicist said on Twitter and on the late singer’s website on Saturday.

“It is with deep sadness that I announce the death of Irene Cara on behalf of her family,” publicist Judith A. Moose wrote online.

Moore also confirmed Cara’s death to ABC news network KABC.

The youngest daughter of a Latin American musician, Cara began her career as a child singing and dancing on Spanish television, according to a biography on her website.

She rose to stardom with her role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame. She also sang the film’s theme song.

However, her biggest hit came in 1983 with her song “Flashdance…What a Feeling” for the movie Flashdance. The song earned Cara an Oscar.

Cara’s other career accolades include a Golden Globe Award, as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination, a People’s Choice Award, an Obie Award as a child for her work in theater, and an Image Award, according to her website.

According to Moose, Cara died at her home in Florida and her cause of death is unknown but will be “released once information becomes available.”
