Eurovision Song Contest 2022
How many controversies at the Eurovision Song Contest after Ukraine’s victory. This time, it is Romania that speaks up, complaining that its jury’s vote in favor of Moldova was replaced by a then-official vote in Ukraine. A change that, however, would have guaranteed the Kalush Orchestra the final victory, obtained for an overwhelming score in the televoting. The complaint comes from Moldova’s national television TVR, which announces: “We did it unpleasantly surprised to see that the vote was not taken into account in the final classification as assigned by the organizers another set of notes to the final competitors. We would like to point out that the Romanian jury had decided to award full marks to the representatives of the Republic of Moldova.
What happened?
So, coincidentally, Romania was one of the six neighboring countries with Ukraine and Lithuania that awarded the Kalush Orchestra 12 points, the maximum. But the moderators had not communicated their vote directly live. Just like what happened with the Bucharest TV presenters. TVR presenter Eda Marcus had posted live “Bucharest is call” but the EBU, the European Broadcasting Union, denied access to the live:
This is a real-time recording after we were denied access to the main Eurovision broadcast for technical reasons – says Marcus in the video which went viral -. It is proof that these technical reasons did not exist, they were only an excuse. We just “jumped” as if we didn’t exist.
Alleged irregularities at Eurovision
The EBU is evaluating everything and has announced in its analysis that irregularities in the collection of votes have been found in six countries. Including Poland and Romania. The blog Eurofestivalitalia.net stressed instead that clear evidence of “an agreement to mutually exchange points from nation to nation” had emerged. It shouldn’t be, as Eurovision’s juries are chosen on criteria and judgement, in line with healthy competition involving 40 countries.
