was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the investigation into the attack on Capitol Hill and the discovery of top secret documents at Ma-a-Lago
US Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a super prosecutor to review the evidence against Donald Trump regarding the attack on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2020 and the disappearance of top-secret documents kept at the ‘former President’s Mar-a-Lago mansion. Commissioner Jack Smith, a war crimes judge currently serving at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Smith is tasked with overseeing both investigations into Trump. The Attorney General’s decision therefore recognizes the political nature of the investigation, which involves not only a former president but also a future candidate for the White House. Although the special prosecutor will assume the role of leading the investigation, Garland will still have the final say in deciding any charges against Trump.
