Israel bans Brazilian humanitarian aid to Gaza World

This Tuesday, the Israeli government blocked humanitarian aid that Brazil was sending to the Gaza Strip. The information originally published by Italian MP Angelo Bonelli was confirmed by Planalto.

According to Bonelli, Israel reasoned that the products were potentially dangerous. Planalto did not disclose the reason given by Israel for refusing to import food.

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said an aid convoy was turned away by Israeli authorities at a checkpoint in the northern Gaza Strip.

The UN agency said 14 trucks carrying food waited for three hours at the Wadi Gaza checkpoint, southeast of the territory, before being turned back by the Israeli army. It is unknown whether there was any Brazilian assistance on this convoy.

The United Nations estimates that 2.2 of the territory's 2.4 million residents are on the brink of famine, especially in the north, where Israeli forces are blocking the flow of aid.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said this week it observed horrific scenes of starving children and severe shortages of food, medicine and generator fuel during a relief mission at two hospitals in northern Gaza.

The Hamascontrolled health ministry in the Gaza Strip said 97 people had died in the past 24 hours, most of them women and children.
