Israel: Bennett in minority after Arab MP defection

(ANSAmed) – TEL AVIV, 19 MAY – Crisis in Naftali Bennett’s government after a left-wing Arab parliamentarian – Jida Rinawi Zoabi of the Meretz party – announced today that she no longer considers herself part of the coalition. As a result, Bennett now leads a de facto minority government, with just 59 MPs out of 120 supporting the Knesset.

According to the media, Zoabi’s move came as a complete surprise not only to Bennett but also to the Meretz party itself, who immediately tried to dissuade her, but so far to no avail.

In an open letter, Zoabi denounced that he could no longer identify with the government’s “radical and right-wing positions”. “The images on the Temple Mount of violent police officers against praying believers and the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh have led me to a conclusion: That is enough. I can no longer support a government that abuses the society I come from.” (ANSamed).
