Israel bombs southern Lebanon after Hezbollah rocket fire – Portal

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT, Oct 11 (Portal) – Southern Lebanese towns were hit with Israeli shelling on Wednesday in response to a fresh rocket attack by the powerful armed group Hezbollah, as cross-border violence stretched into a fourth day.

Hezbollah said it fired precision missiles at an Israeli position in response to the killing of its members by Israeli fire earlier this week and promised “firm” responses to attacks on Lebanese territory, particularly deadly ones.

The Israeli military said it hit a Hezbollah position with an airstrike and also “attacked” Lebanon after a military post near the Israeli town of Arab al-Aramshe was attacked with anti-tank fire on Wednesday.

Details on the number of victims were not initially disclosed.

A Lebanese security source said Hezbollah fired two precision missiles at Israel, which the group considers its arch-enemy.

Residents of the southern Lebanese town of Rmeish said Israeli shelling struck nearby. A security source told Portal that Israeli artillery shells hit the rocket launch point around Dhayra, opposite Arab al-Aramshe.

Lebanese in these cities say the recent violence has brought back memories of the summer of 2006, when Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel fought a brutal months-long war.

Local Lebanese television station al-Jadeed broadcast images of clouds of white smoke rising from a forested area near some houses and farmland in Dhayra.

Both Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas claimed attacks from Lebanon on Tuesday. Hezbollah fired a guided missile at an Israeli tank and released a video of its destruction. Hamas said it fired a volley of rockets from Al-Koleilah into Israel.

The Lebanese army said on Wednesday it had found the platform from which rockets were fired in Al-Koleilah.

The outbreak of border violence came after Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel over the weekend and Israel launched a bombing campaign against Gaza.
