Brazil was left out of a meeting of Israeli diplomats at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with relatives of hostages captured by Hamas, this Tuesday (14). The information comes from UOL journalist Jamil Chade.
According to the report, ambassadors from countries including Argentina, France and several other countries were at the event, but none from Brazil. Brazilian diplomats report that they were not invited, a fact confirmed by the Israeli mission to the United Nations. However, according to Israeli diplomacy, it was due to an “error in sending the message.”
The aim of the event would be to inform other governments about the hostagetaking and thus convince the international community to continue the war in the Gaza Strip.
In recent weeks, tensions have increased between representatives of Brazil and Israel over the conflict against Hamas. The Brazilian government expressed dissatisfaction with the “delay” in including Brazilian citizens on the lists of foreigners allowed to leave Gaza. The returnees returned this Monday (13).
While welcoming Brazilians in the region, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) sharply criticized the State of Israel’s stance in the Gaza Strip and described the Israeli government’s response to the Hamas attacks as “acts of terrorism.”
The event, called by Israel’s ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zonshine, which featured a video showing images of Hamas attacks, also sparked criticism from the Brazilian government. In addition to Bolsonaro parliamentarians, former President Jair Bolsonaro was also present.
