A ceasefire lasting at least four days between Hamas and Israel has come into effect in the Gaza Strip. This was announced on military radio. The release of 13 Israeli hostages, mostly women and children, is expected this afternoon. Subsequently, around thirty Palestinian women and minors imprisoned in Israel will also be released. The Israeli prison administration has already begun releasing Palestinian prisoners who are expected to be released as part of the ceasefire negotiated with Hamas. \N
The temporary cessation of hostilities is also expected to affect Israel’s northern border after repeated firefights between the army and Lebanese Hezbollah. The first trucks, part of the humanitarian aid convoy destined for Gaza after the ceasefire began, entered through the Rafah border crossing.

Nella base aerea gli ostaggi rimarranno non più di due ore, per poi essere trasferiti in ospedale, per controlli medici più approfonditi e dove potranno incontrare i familiari. Ma non è detto che torneranno subito a casa: l’ospedale pediatrico Schneider ha raccomandato che gli ostaggi rimangano almeno 48 ore in osservazione prima di poter tornare dai propri cari.

In the Middle East, the Red Cross will take over 39 Palestinian prisoners
Red Cross officials have arrived by bus at Ofer prison in the West Bank to pick up the 39 Palestinian prisoners that Israel will release on the first day of the ceasefire as part of the agreement to release Israeli hostages from Gaza. A few hours ago, all prisoners were brought to Ofer in preparation for their release scheduled for this afternoon (24 were in Damoon Prison and 15 in Megiddo Prison) and were taken in a heavily escorted convoy to the West Bank Prison. They are all women and young men; and they will be released and leave the West Bank prison two hours after the hostages are released. On the outside wall of the prison hung a banner with the Israeli flag and the words “Together we will win” in Hebrew in blue and white. The 39 detainees were selected from a list of 300 women and teenagers compiled by Israel and are accused of various crimes, from stone-throwing to attempted murder (according to Israeli radio, there are also those accused of attempted stabbing). The vast majority of them are detained without trial and the majority of those on the list are teenagers, 40% under the age of 18. Before they leave the country, they must sign a declaration in which they undertake not to commit any further acts of terrorism. Their families will gather at a nearby checkpoint to welcome them.

Cameron sees Abu Mazen and announces new aid for Gaza
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron met with Palestinian Authority (PNA) President Abu Mazen in the West Bank as the temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is underway. Sky News reports about it. Earlier, Cameron himself announced that the UK would double its humanitarian aid to Gaza with an additional £30 million (€34.5 million) for Palestinian civilians affected by the conflict. Cameron met Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem yesterday and plans a series of talks with Palestinian officials today to discuss how the UK’s efforts can help ease the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. A humanitarian aid convoy travels north of Gaza
A convoy of humanitarian aid arriving from Egypt travels from the southern Gaza Strip towards the northern sector via the Sallah-a-Din road. This was reported by Israeli public television Kan. The convoy consists of trucks carrying medicine and food as well as ambulances that arrived from Egypt. Until now, international humanitarian aid entering Egypt through the Rafah crossing remained in the so-called “safe zone” in the south of the Gaza Strip. Today, under the ceasefire agreement, they have been authorized by Israel to also reach the north.
