European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel said they welcomed the decisive agreement between Israel and Hamas on the release of hostages.

Von der Leyen said in a statement released on Wednesday that she “wholeheartedly” welcomed the agreement on the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

“I share the joy of the families who will soon be able to hug their loved ones again. And I am very grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly over the last few weeks through diplomatic channels to negotiate this agreement,” she said.

He also called on Hamas to “immediately release all hostages and allow them to return home safely,” he said, adding that the European Commission “will do everything to use this pause for a humanitarian recovery in Gaza.” .

He added that he had asked the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, “to increase deliveries to Gaza as quickly as possible to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”

European Council President Charles Michel also welcomed the agreement to release the hostages, saying he was “grateful to Qatar and Egypt who helped in the negotiations” and that “the Hams must release all hostages.”

“It is also crucial to take advantage of this pause in hostilities to allow maximum humanitarian assistance to reach those in need,” Michel said in a post on X.
