The war between Israel and Hamas entered its 69th day on Thursday, December 14th. While Israel's defense minister says Israeli operations to crush Hamas will take “more than a few months,” the United States, Israel's ally, wants the war between Israel and Hamas to “end as soon as possible.” Here's what you should remember from this new day of war.

The US calls on Israel to end the war

The US wants the war between Israel and Hamas “to end as soon as possible,” assures a White House spokesman. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan discussed a shift “in the near future” of Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip to “low-intensity operations” during his visit to Israel, spokesman John Kirby added.

Israel expects the war to last “more than a few months.”

Israeli operations to dismantle Hamas will have to last “more than a few months,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Thursday. “Hamas is a terrorist organization that was built over a decade to fight Israel and has built an underground and air infrastructure that is not easily destroyed,” he stressed during a visit to Israel by American National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

American visit to Israel

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan is in Jerusalem for talks with Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday and Friday. According to the White House, the need to “conduct more surgical and precise strikes to reduce civilian casualties” in Gaza will be discussed in particular. Joe Biden spoke of “indiscriminate bombings” and a possible “erosion” of Western support for Israel.

Erdogan warns of regional “consequences”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned US President Joe Biden on Thursday evening of the “negative regional and global consequences” of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. “President Erdogan said that the intensification and prolongation of Israeli attacks could have negative regional and global consequences,” the Turkish presidency reported in a statement released following this telephone interview.
