From Gaza, Islamic Jihad has already accused Israel of being responsible for Adnan’s death in prison. “This crime – he warned in a statement – will not pass unanswered”.
Sheikh Khader Adnan, 44, died after an 86-day hunger strike, the Israel Prison Service said.
He was then found unconscious in his cell that night and taken to a nearby hospital, where his death was confirmed.
Adnan was arrested for the tenth time in February on suspicion of membership of a terrorist organization. The sheikh has enjoyed great popularity as a protagonist of other hunger strikes in the past, and his death may fuel the violence.
