Israel reported carrying out airstrikes that resulted in the death of Ahmed Siam, who was identified as responsible for taking about 1,000 people hostage at alRantisi Hospital in Gaza and preventing the group’s movement to the south of the region.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Siam was neutralized when he sought refuge in the AlBuraq school, where other members of the extremist group Hamas were also hiding.

“Siam was the commander of Hamas’ Naser Radwan Company and is another example of how Hamas used civilians in Gaza as human shields for terrorist purposes,” an IDF statement said.

Hamas has not yet commented on the incident. The increasing tensions in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group mean that the Gaza border with Egypt is closed for three days and foreigners are prevented from leaving the country. A group of 34 Brazilians are waiting for permission to pass through Rafah.

Egypt controls the only border in Gaza that does not share a border with Israel, but the Rafah checkpoint is subject to strict customs and immigration controls. After the Hamas attacks in early October, the post was closed and no one was allowed to leave or enter Palestinian territory.
