Israeli and Palestinian authorities pledge to prevent new violence

Israeli and Palestinian authorities this Sunday (26) pledged to “avoid further acts of violence” and seek ways to calm the situation in the West Bank, according to a joint statement released after a meeting in Jordan .

“After intense and open discussions”, the participants of the meeting, which took place in the city of Aqaba, “reaffirmed the need to commit to detente and to avoid further acts of violence”.

The meeting was attended by Jordanian, Egyptian, Israeli, Palestinian and American authorities, the eightpoint communiqué informs.

Among those attending were Palestinian Intelligence Director Majed Faraj, Israeli Intelligence Director (Shin Beth) Ronen Bar and US National Security Council Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk.

The goal of the meeting, which lasted several hours, was to bring calm back to the Palestinian territories after days of violence, Jordanian state television reported.

According to the broadcaster, it was the first meeting of this kind in many years.

At the end of the talks, the government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority reaffirmed “the common will and commitment” to end unilateral measures for a period of three to six months.

The deal includes a commitment by Israel to halt debate on creating new settlements for four months and not to legalize “wild” settlements for six months, the text reads.

During the meeting, two Israelis died in a Palestinian “attack” in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, according to a statement released by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
