In recent days, the Israeli government has resumed its offensive, focusing primarily on the southern areas, the very region that was previously considered the safest. The result, according to the United Nations, was a record number of displaced people, with 85% of Gaza’s population 1.9 million people affected.
One of the families already affected by the Israeli offensive in southern Gaza is that of Hasan Rabee, the Brazilian who managed to take part in the first wave of evacuations in the region and who now lives in Brazil. However, he left behind his mother and sisters, who do not have a Brazilian passport. Now they are included in the second list drawn up by the government and handed over to the Israeli authorities.
But in recent days, Israeli tanks have already appeared at the door of his home in Khan Younis. They managed to escape and found themselves in a situation of humanitarian chaos.
There was hope in the Brazilian government that the almost weeklong ceasefire would create space for the evacuation of people on the second list. But the resumption of attacks undermined the chances of an immediate withdrawal.
In total, more than 60 people are in this situation, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva used each of his meetings with leaders in the region to look for a way out for these Palestinians and Brazilians.
With the new offensive, the families hope that the critical situation will increase the pressure on the government to find a solution for those left behind in the Gaza Strip.
