Two Israeli tourists and their Egyptian guide were murdered by an Egyptian police officer at a popular archaeological site in Alexandria on Sunday, Israel’s Foreign Ministry reported.
The trio were shot while visiting the ancient Roman site of Pompey’s Pillar in the heart of the coastal city.
It remains unclear what sparked the shooting, but two Egyptian security sources told Portal the police officer claimed he lost control after being provoked by the tour group and then randomly fired his weapon into their midst
Another person was injured in the shooting, but reports vary as to whether he was Egyptian or Israeli.
The shooter was reportedly taken into custody.
Footage from the crime scene showed bodies lying around the ancient site as investigators moved among them and onlookers screamed in despair.
The shooting came just a day after Hamas militants invaded Israel in a stealth attack that left hundreds of Israelis dead and scores more taken hostage by the Palestinian terror group.
After the shooting in Egypt on Sunday, bodies lay slumped at the historic site. Onlookers screamed for help as the bodies of the tour group lay around them. Two of the dead were Israelis.
Thousands more people in Israel were injured.
Since then, Israel has declared war on Hamas and vowed “powerful revenge” against the group, which Gaza officials say has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 370 Palestinians and 2,000 injuries in Gaza.
Egypt was the first country in the region to formalize relations with Israel with a peace treaty in 1979.
Since then, the nation has been instrumental in brokering relations between Israel, Palestinians and Arab nations.

Pro-Palestinian sentiment among the Egyptian population has long caused tensions with Israeli visitors.
In June, three Israeli soldiers and an Egyptian security guard were killed by an Egyptian police officer during a confrontation over a smuggling operation at the Egyptian border.
Israel called the killing a terrorist attack.
