  • (1492) On September 6th the expedition of Christoph Columbus Departure from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, the last port of call before the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean;
  • (1522) First circumnavigation: Juan Sebastián Elcano, member of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, arrives in the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, with only one ship and 18 men;
  • (1620) English pilgrims leave the port of Southampton aboard the Mayflower to establish themselves in North America.

  • (1803) British scientist John Dalton begins to popularize the use of symbols to represent the atoms of various elements.
