It used to be a broken washing machine, now it’s become a home for stray cats

What to do with a broken washing machine It can undoubtedly be disposed of in the appropriate urban eco-island. Or you can convert it into a cat house.

Ahmet Karakayan and his wife Nilüfer chose the second option.

We are in Küçükbahçe, Turkey, where the couple retreated, attracted by the natural beauty of the place. Ahmet has always been an animal lover and has chosen to combine his passion with his craft skills.

When a washing machine broke, he and his wife removed the drum and electronics and put pillows and blankets inside. The now unusable device was thus transformed into a cat house. A haven that is particularly welcome in the winter months when the cold intensifies. So welcome to get Ahmet to reply.

“As soon as I built the first house, 4-5 cats came in. When 30-40 cats came in, I realized that one wasn’t enough and I started building another one,” he said. A second cat house was actually built from neighbors’ waste materials, starting with wood.

“Cats are also citizens of this country, they have a heart and a soul. If we don’t take care of them in winter, they won’t survive,” explained Ahmet.

The man also takes care of stray dogs: he built two houses for them and is building another one out of concrete found on the street.

“If they don’t catch a cold, they’ll deal with it,” says Ahmet, promising to continue building shelters for his four-legged fellow citizens.
