“It was a shock” – Vincent Desharnais

The recent changes at the top of the Edmonton Oilers have impacted Vincent Desharnais.

At least that’s what the main character said during an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Monday.

“It was a lot at the same time. Our season didn’t go well. Suddenly the coaches I’ve known for over four years are no longer there. It was definitely a shock. I was really glad to be able to see them before they left. I went into the arena to thank them. So far the new coaches are doing a great job. It’s hard not to like when you have Paul Coffey as your defensive coach.”

Desharnais’ relationship with the former Oilers coaching staff dates back to his early days in the American Hockey League. The Quebecer had also developed an excellent relationship with Dave Manson.

“It’s a little thanks to them that I was able to come here. When I was in the American League, Manson helped me a lot. He told me I was going to make it to the NHL and I just had to keep working. He is someone who gave me a lot of confidence and who always believed in me. I’m sure it means something to me that he’s no longer here.”

Overall, the Oilers are still trying to get back on track after a very difficult start to the season. On this subject, the Quebecer claims that he and his teammates will have to work harder until the end of the season to be able to participate in the playoffs.

“December is a very big month for us. Our six home games are against six good teams. That’s 12 big points and we need every point now. We have a hole that has been dug and we are trying to quietly get out of it, but we will not be able to do it in two weeks or in a month.

The Oilers haven’t played a game in December and will return to action on Wednesday against the Hurricanes. Desharnais thinks this break is beneficial for the team.

“I think the timing is really good for this. It gives coaches the opportunity to work harder on the system they want to establish. It’s not easy when you’re in the middle of a game. You don’t want to practice too much so as not to tire the players too much. It allows players to rest and recharge.”
