Italian bishop sets wrong alarm clock and misses Christmas mass

Corrado Pizziolo wanted to get some sleep after dinner. He was only awakened by his assistant knocking on the door. But by then it was too late for the mass he was to celebrate.

An Italian bishop has tripped the alarm and missed the traditional midnight mass on Christmas Eve he was supposed to be celebrating. Corrado Pizziolo, bishop of Vittorio Veneto, in the Veneto region of northern Italy, told the faithful he was sorry for having let them down.

Pizziolo explained that he accidentally set his alarm to 10:50 am instead of 10:50 pm after deciding to get some sleep after dinner. “At one point, I heard a knock on the door and an assistant came in who was worried that something might have happened to me,” the bishop said.

It was too late to get to the service on time. Thus, it was celebrated by Mirco Miotto, head of the diocesan department for the liturgy. When the bishop appeared after Mass, he apologized to the faithful. “We shouldn’t be afraid of our own weaknesses,” he commented.
