Bishop of three dioceses in the province of Caserta, south of Italydecided to suspend the presence of godparents It is godmothers for baptisms and confirmations for a trial period of three years.
According to him, in today’s society they have “lost their original value”.
“Monsignor Giacomo Cirulli, Bishop of TeanoCalvi, AlifeCaiazzo and Sessa Aurunca, will promulgate a decree on March 20 mandating baptisms, communions and the rite of Christian initiation for adults,” reads the Facebook page of one of the dioceses.
“In the current socioecclesial context, the ministry of godparents has largely lost its original value,” reads a note on the three dioceses united by Pope Francis in February under the leadership of Cirulli.
According to him, the mission of godparents “consists in accompanying catechumens or confirmands throughout the journey of faith, not only in the celebration of the sacrament. Currently, however, that role has almost completely lost its meaning,” he explained, reduced to some sort of formal greeting or social custom.
