Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi is under investigation for allegedly using a fake Covid vaccination card to enter Australia in 2022 as she prepares to compete in this month’s Open.

Giorgi’s family doctor, Daniela Grillone, was arrested in February and accused of administering hundreds of fake serums and pads to high-profile Italians.

In December, Italian newspaper a Repubblica revealed that 31-year-old Giorgi was being investigated by police for allegedly using a fake certificate – and now the doctor under fire has claimed the tennis star had not been vaccinated.

“The Giorgi family has been my treatment for a long time,” she told the Italian daily Corriere del Veneto.

“Camila Giorgi suffered from what is known as tennis elbow. Shortly before the start of summer, she came to ask about the possibility of receiving false certificates for all mandatory vaccinations and the Covid vaccine.

“I can confirm with absolute certainty that none of the vaccines against the Giorgi family were actually administered. I have not received any payment in this case.

“I am deeply upset and apologize for my action.”

Giorgi, who is ranked No. 66 in the world, played at the Australian Open last year and reached the third round where he eventually lost to Aussie Ash Barty in straight sets.

The Italian also played in three tournaments in the United States – a country where proof of vaccination is a requirement for entry.

Former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic made global headlines after being deported from Australia after arriving in the country without a vaccination against COVID-19.

Djokovic’s principles of not taking the Covid jab have done significant damage to his own ambitions, as his refusal to meet eligibility requirements cost him two chances to win Grand Slam titles last year.

In November, the Australian government granted the Serb a visa to travel to the Grand Slam event, saying it had decided to reverse the decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa after considering all relevant factors.

Giorgi is back in Australia and made her Adelaide International debut on Saturday but lost in qualifying.

She is gearing up to compete next at the Australian Open, which begins January 16 in Melbourne.
