The discussions
If Emmanuel Macron, the current President of the European Union, after speaking to Putin countless times over the past few weeks, announced yesterday that he should have another interview with the Kremlin chief within 48 hours, in order to organize in particular the evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol, the telephone connection between Rome and Moscow is currently under construction and does not yet have a fixed timetable. In recent days, Andriy Yermak, head of the cabinet of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in an interview with Georgian media that the four permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations, with exceptions, are China, the United States, France and Great Britain of the Russia involved, should be the linchpin of an agreement guaranteeing neutrality (demanded by Moscow) and security (demanded by Kyiv) in the event that the peace talks go well. Talks that should resume for two days in Turkey, as has already happened in recent weeks.
A red line with Moscow to evacuate civilians
However, a positive Senate seems a long way off at the moment, even if the words of the Ukrainian government spokesman say that diplomacy is continuing despite the war and bombs. The day before last evening Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio also confirmed this picture: Ukraine welcomes Italy as one of the guarantors of the agreement between Russia and Ukraine, if there is one, and this shows that during this period we have by no means been marginal, mostly we have been discreet. Di Maio then underlined another aspect of the contact, which is to take place in the next few days, namely that Draghi’s call with Putin is in the direction of a European vote, which we would have on Thursday to ask Putin for a ceasefire and allow us to evacuate the civilians. Italy has never established any contacts with any partner because we continue to work towards the goal of peace, the minister clarified, noting that our country still has a red line with Russia to manage the evacuation of civilians from Ukraine .
