Italy: Ten prison guards are accused of torturing a Tunisian prisoner

Local prosecutors said these prison guards were charged with torture, assault and assault on a detainee, and concealing the facts.

Ten prison guards at a correctional facility in Reggio Emilia, a city in northern Italy, were accused of torturing and beating a prisoner of Tunisian origin in April, the local judiciary said on Thursday.

The guards were relieved of their duties after being charged with torture, assaulting a detainee and concealing facts, local prosecutors said in a statement.

“Kicks and Punches”

The investigation, which focused on 14 suspects, was launched after a detainee, described as a man of Tunisian origin, lodged a complaint in connection with the April 3 events.

The detainee was forced to lie on the floor with his head covered with a pillowcase and he was “kicked and kicked in the face and body,” prosecutor Gaetano Calogero Paci said, quoted by local media.

According to media reports, the detainee in solitary confinement broke a sink and injured himself with a shrapnel, prompting the arrival of a doctor. CCTV helped identify the suspects, the sources said.
