Italy’s future depends on Mario Draghi’s long to do list

The prime minister calls for clear support for his reform plans: an overview of the most important tasks for the coming months and the main reforms that are now at risk.

Mario Draghi’s speech to the Senate Wednesday morning, in which he wanted to save his government and risk a fresh start, lasted nearly 36 minutes. The prime minister made good use of the time: he formulated a list of tasks that his country must fulfill in the coming weeks and months to remain stable.

The speech was addressed to populists from his previous team. But Lega, Forza Italia and the Five Star Movement refused to trust the government that night – and therefore also signaled that they were not prepared to give up expensive projects. This will provoke violent international reactions: in view of the precarious global situation, a new instability in the important state of the euro and NATO comes at an inopportune moment.
