‘It’s a war crime’: New York Times photojournalist documents war atrocities in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied that his forces are targeting civilians in Ukraine, but the world has seen the truth for itself – a horrifying photo of a family lying dead after trying to flee the city of Irpin.

The front page photo of The New York Times was taken by Lynsey Addario, who has dedicated her career to documenting war zones.

“I went ahead and found a spot behind the wall and started taking pictures,” she told CBS Evening News host and editor-in-chief Nora O’Donnell. “For several minutes, a row of mortars fell closer and closer to our position until one of them landed about 30 feet from where I was standing and killed a mother and her two children.”

Addario said the shocking scene made her think about her own children.

“I am a mother and when I work I try to stay very focused. I try to keep the camera in front of my eyes,” she said. “But of course it was very emotional. First, I’ve just been covered in gravel from a mortar shell that could have killed us very easily. street near our security adviser, I ran and saw this family sprawled around, and I saw these little moon rovers and a puffy coat.

Addario added that even though she felt disrespectful to photography, she thought she had to do it.

“This is a war crime,” she said.

When asked how she was holding up, Addario replied that she was trying to focus on her work.

“I think it’s very important that people all over the world see these images,” she said. “The New York Times very boldly placed this image on the front page. It’s a complex image, but it’s a historically important image.”
