It’s the end for Zack Kassian

Zack Kassian announced his retirement from hockey on Thursday.

The 32-year-old forward appeared in 661 games over 12 seasons in the NHL.

In September he tried unsuccessfully to get a contract with the Anaheim Ducks, who gave him a professional tryout.

“Playing in the NHL is one thing, but spending 12 years there is something very special,” he wrote in a press release. “I made lifelong connections with players, coaches and equipment managers.”

Kassian spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes. The highlight of that season was essentially the beating he took against Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj in October (can be admired in the main video).

Last year he was happy with two minor goals in 51 games for the Coyotes.

Kassian had spent the last seven seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, who also acquired him from CH in December 2015 for goaltender Ben Scrivens.

The Ontario native was a first-round pick (13th overall) by the Buffalo Sabers in 2009 and amassed 203 points and 913 penalty minutes over the course of his career.
