Ivano Marescotti, the actor who died on Saturday March 26 at the age of 77, recounted in his autobiographical book Fatti Veri the pain of the death of his son Mattia, who died of cancer at the age of 44. The actor opened up about the final moments in his son’s life and his unusual decision to take to the stage on the day of his death.

The death of the son
Matthew Marescotti He was Ivano’s first child, born from the actor’s first marriage. In his book, Ivano recounts the last time he said goodbye to Mattia before he died. “Bye Mattia, see you tomorrow, bye. Open your eyes. The lips moved, but nothing came out. I didn’t insist and he dozed off again. As I left the room, I looked at him lying on the bed between two other patients. I thought this picture would probably be the last of him alive.”
Marescotti also recounted that he had gone on stage at the theater the day of Mattia’s death, and he had done the same when his father died. “There are pains that cannot be overcome” – he said – “I went on stage on the day of my father’s funeral and also that of Mattia. It was my grieving process. The overlap of the audience’s laughter with my tears was incredible. But that’s where I felt closest to them, much more than next to their coffin.
The other wives
Besides Mattia, Ivano Marescotti had a second daughter, Iliade Marescotti, born of the marriage to Ifigenia Kanarà. A year ago, the actor married his third wife, Erica Leonelli, a former student in his acting class.
The disease
The actor was hospitalized in Ravenna due to the worsening of a long illness. Formerly a city surveyor, he had become an actor by accident on the threshold of 40 years: “One day an actor friend of mine asked me to replace him in a show,” he revealed to Corriere della Sera, “he said: ‘It’s not you.’ A pro, if you get it wrong, nothing happens. I made my debut without ever doing a single rehearsal in my life. But then I did a very hard apprenticeship. Before Albertazzi caught my eye and took me on a 5 month tour, I was almost made a bum. I ate sandwiches and slept in a sleeping bag with no home.’
