In Ivory Coast, President Alassane Ouattara dismissed his Prime Minister Patrick Achi, who has been in office since 2021. A new government is expected to be formed soon, two years before the presidential election.

With this new decree, President Alassane Ouattara “terminates the functions of the Prime Minister, the Head of Government and those of the members of the Government,” said a press release from the Secretary General of the Presidency, Abdourahmane Cissé. “While awaiting the appointment of the new Prime Minister and the formation of the new government, the Prime Minister and members of the outgoing government are responsible for dealing with current affairs,” the press release said.

Patrick Achi was appointed in March 2021 after the death of his predecessor Hamed Bakayoko from cancer, who himself succeeded Amadou Gon Coulibaly, who died in July 2020. He resigned in April 2022 before immediately returning to his post as part of a slight reshuffle. Last month he won a comfortable victory in local elections in his Mé (South) region.

Alassane Ouattara’s decision was no surprise; it had been expected for a week, our correspondent in Abidjan recalls. Marine Jeannin. During the last Council of Ministers on September 28, the President warned government members of an impending reshuffle.

Nevertheless, the presidential party RHDP emerged victorious in the local and Senate elections in September. But the 2025 presidential election is just around the corner and the three major parties are already starting to line up for battle. Analysts say Alassane Ouattara may need a missionary government to boost social cohesion through a mix of technocrats and politicians. Perhaps a way to respond to the concerns of the population in an economic environment characterized by inflation.
