EXCLUSIVE: Production is currently underway in New Zealand on Warner Bros/Vertigo/Legendary's feature version of Mojang/Microsoft's Minecraft, and sources tell us that Jack Black is joining the cast of the Jason Momoa-directed film.

The plot of the picture is not yet known, the authors are still being identified. We hear that Black is playing the role of Steve.

Minecraft also stars Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The Mojang sandbox title is the best-selling video game of all time, with 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players.

The Minecraft film comes from Vertigo, co-financer Legendary, Mojang/Microsoft and Momoa's On the Roam. Producers on the project include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui and the late Jill Messick. EPs include Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts.

Black played the role of villain Bowser in the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, Illumination and Universal's “The Super Mario Bros Movie,” which grossed $1.36 billion worldwide. Black recently received his third Golden Globe nomination, this time for co-writing the film's love ballad “Peaches,” which he also sang. Black recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Voice Performance in a Children's or Young Adult Program for “Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.” Black will play the role of Po in the upcoming DreamWorks Animated film “Kung Fu Panda 4,” which hits theaters March 8. With three films, the Kung Fu Panda series has grossed $1.8 billion.

He also stars in Lionsgate's feature film version of the video game Borderlands, which hits theaters on August 9th. Black and Kyle Gass' Tenacious D are on tour in Europe this spring with Tenacious D and the Spicy Meatball Tour. In 2015, Tenacious D won a Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Performance for their cover of “The Last in Line.” Black also starred in Sony's “Jumanji” franchise, which grossed $1.796 billion, and Peter Jackson's “King Kong,” which grossed $556 million. The actor is from Ocean Ave. and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
