Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, wife of Will Smith, said she hopes her husband and Chris Rock get along after Will punched Chris at the 2022 Oscars.
“About Oscar night. My deepest hope is that these two wise and capable men have an opportunity to heal, speak out and reconcile,” Jade said during the opening of today’s Red Table Talk.
Given the state of the world today, we need both, and we all really need each other more than ever. Jada PinkettSmith
“Until then, Will and I continued to do what we’ve been doing for the past 28 years — which is to keep exploring this thing called living together. Thanks for listening,” Jada concluded.
The punch
Will took the stage during the Oscars after a joke by Chris Rock. Citing the film GI Jane, he said that since Demi Moore shaved her hair for the role, Jade could do a second cut of the film. Smith wasn’t pleased that Jada had alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” Smith said shortly after the attack. D
Days later, Will, who had announced his departure from the Academy, was suspended for ten years. The actor even apologized before receiving the punishment.
Why was Chris Rock’s joke offensive?
In his joke, Chris Rock compared Jada Pinkett Smith to Demi Moore’s character on The Edge of Honor because both have shaved heads. Jada suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss. She decided to shave her hair in 2021 after years of hiding her blemishes with scarves and turbans.
In his apology, Will Smith says, “Jokes about me are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me, and I responded emotionally.”
It’s not the first time Jada has been the subject of lewd jokes from Chris Rock: at the 2016 Oscars, he hosted the ceremony and she was one of the artists who boycotted the awards in protest of the academy’s lack of diversity.
In his monologue, he quoted her: “Isn’t she from TV? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” said the comedian, who has also been involved in controversy for joking with other people. . .
