The Eagles have agreed a five-year, $255 million contract extension with Jalen Hurts to make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

According to NFL Network, he will have a guaranteed $180 million in the deal and around $15 million in inducements for the season.

His new deal also appears to include a no-trade clause, which would be the first in Eagles history.

Hurts led the Eagles to the Super Bowl last season, but they were beaten by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles confirmed the landmark news in a tweet Monday morning, saying: “Keeping the main thing in Philly. We have agreed with Jalen Hurts on a 5-year extension until the 2028 season.

The $255 million Dea dwarfs the total value the Cleveland Browns paid for Deshaun Watson last year at $230 million, even though that contract is fully guaranteed.

The 24-year-old has been with the Eagles since his call-up in 2020. His last season was his best, despite losing the Super Bowl — Hurts completed 66.5% of his passes for 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, plus 760 rushing yards and 13 TDs.

His form made him an MVP contender, but he was ultimately beaten by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

After the Super Bowl loss in Phoenix in February, Hurts said of his team, “I’m so proud of this team. I’ll say I’m so proud of this team for everything we’ve been able to overcome.

“Obviously we had a big time goal at the end that we wanted to hit and we missed it.

“The beauty of this is that everyone experiences different pains, everyone experiences different anguish of life, but you decide if you want to learn from it. You decide if you want to use this as a teachable moment and I know what I will do.

And while Mahomes emerged victorious over Hurts, he praised him after the Super Bowl.

“The way he showed up on that stage, ran, threw the ball, whatever it took for his team to win, that was a special feat. I don’t want it to get lost in the loss they had,” Mahomes said.

NFL Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said of Hurts at the recent NFL Annual Convention in Phoenix Eagles, “The thing about Jalen that I’m so optimistic about is that he’s just so incredible — I’m not telling you what.” You don’t know here, but when I see him practically every day, he has an incredible passion for being phenomenal.

“You can see that with the big ones. We all know from other sports and with certain quarterbacks in this league that you can define them by their attention to detail and work ethic. I think the future is so great for him.’

The Hurts deal could have ramifications for the entire NFL. Lamar Jackson, for example, has asked the Ravens for a trade deal as he feels his worth isn’t being met, but celebrated the arrival of Odell Beckham Jr. in Baltimore last week, which many interpreted as a sign he’s could stay.

The Eagles went 0-2 when Hurts missed two games late in the season with a sprained right shoulder.

The Eagles stunned their fans when they collected second-round hurts from Oklahoma in 2020. They apparently had Carson Wentz anchored in the QB and had more pressing needs. Hurt was to serve as insurance for Wentz. Instead, he ousted him and became one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL.
