James Corden reveals why he’s leaving The Late Late Show on The Drew Barrymore Show

While his final episode of The Late Late Show isn’t fully scheduled at this point, James Corden opens up on why he’s leaving the late-night talk show.

The 44-year-old comedian announced in late April that he would be leaving the talk show sometime in mid-2023, and it was later reported it would be many months before his contract expires in August 2023.

The Cats star appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show on Monday, where he was asked why he was leaving the CBS talk show after eight years on the air.

“Look, it’s in no way easy to leave something that’s so… I mean, I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” Corden began.

“None of leaving the show had to do with not enjoying it. I love it but the truth is it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never saw it as the ultimate goal,” he added.

Corden recalled a story from two summers ago while filming his Amazon Prime Video series Mammals, which debuted in November and included an interaction with his then-10-year-old son Max.

“I was shooting on a Sunday and I came down the stairs, it was about six in the morning and my son, who was ten at the time, was sitting on the stairs and he said, ‘Are you working today?’ and I said, “That’s me,” and he said, “I thought it was Sunday,” and I said, “I know, mate, but this schedule is just everywhere.” We just have to get it done because we only have a tiny amount of time before we have to go back and do the show, “and his face just sort of collapsed,” Corden said.

“I got in the car and called my wife Jules and said, ‘I’ve realized that at best, we’ve got six more summers of Max being like this, wanting to be remotely close to us and I don’t want another can waste.” Corden explained.

“Well, actually the choice to go was, ‘Well, if I really want to do this other work, it can’t come at the expense of our kids, our family,’ and that’s really all that matters,” Corden added.

He admitted: “I’m going to be a mess at this last show. I’ll cry my eyes out, but I will know at my core that putting down roots in London is what’s best for me and what’s best for us as a family, and it feels absolutely right in every way.

Corden began his UK career with hit sitcoms such as Fat Friends and Gavin & Stacey, which he co-created with co-star Ruth Jones.

He also created and starred in The Wrong Mans in 2013 and appeared in the 2014 Disney musical Into the Woods before getting the appearance on The Late Late Show in 2015.
