Jamie Lee Curtis’ plea for ‘One Piece’ role sparks backlash from showrunner

Jamie Lee Curtis has his sights set on a specific role in the Netflix series One Piece, and the show’s team seems confident that it will happen.

Curtis took to Instagram on Friday to address a growing fan movement calling for the Oscar-winning actor to star as Dr. Kureha will be cast in the live-action project. Based on the manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece focuses on a boy named Monkey D. Luffy and his fellow Straw Hat pirates on their search for the titular treasure.

“Once the blow to AMTPT’s greed is settled with a FAIR CONTRACT, I will join the growing enthusiasm of fans in becoming Doctor Kureha at @onepiecenetflix,” Curtis captioned her post.

This prompted Matt Owens, who is the series’ co-showrunner alongside Steven Maeda, to write in the comments section: “My dearest Mama, that’s why we sent you this figure!” No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let’s talk!”

Curtis followed her initial comments with an additional post featuring footage of herself in a media interview promoting Halloween Ends 2022. During the session about a year ago, the star pointed out that her daughter Ruby Guest had encouraged her to watch Dr. Playing Kureha, a grey-haired doctor on Drum Island.

“One Piece” premiered on Netflix last month and was quickly renewed for a second season two weeks later. Oda’s statement on the renewal included a reference to the casting process for Dr. Kureha: “From now on, I think the Straw Hats are going to need a great doctor… We’ll see!”
