Jane Birkin, French singer and actress naturalized in Britain, dies aged 76. According to initial reports, she was found lifeless in her Paris home.
Birkin was born in London in 1946 and moved to France in the late 1960s. After a first marriage to composer John Barry, with whom she had a daughter Kate, who died in 2013, she met Serge Gainsbourg, with whom she had another daughter, Charlotte, also an actress and singer.
Birkin and Gainsbourg will form a pair that has been incredibly successful, topping the charts together in 1969 with the unforgettable duet Je t’aime… moi non plus.
As a singer, but also as an actress, screenwriter and director, she acted in many films, such as “La Piscina” with Alain Delon, “A woman like me” with Brigitte Bardot or “La Fille prodigue” with Michel Piccoli, and also tried her hand at the theater.
The singer was ill and had recently canceled a number of concerts. In September 2021 he suffered a minor stroke. “I’ve always been a huge optimist,” she wrote in a statement announcing the cancellation of the dates, and I realize I still need some time to be able to be back on stage with you guys.
