Jane Fonda remembers Jennifer Lopez cutting her eyebrow in the hit scene with the monster-in-law: ‘She never apologized’

Jane Fonda reminisced on The Drew Barrymore Show and reminisced about movies from her acting career. When a picture of the 2005 rom-com monster-in-law surfaced, Fonda recalled the infamous slap scene to Jennifer Lopez that left her with an injury.

“What immediately comes to mind is that we have a slap scene — I slap her, she slaps me…” Fonda recalled. “Well Jennifer, according to Jennifer, she had this huge diamond ring, and when she hit me once, it cut across my eye — my eyebrow.”

Fonda continued, “And she never apologized.”

Directed by Robert Luketic and written by Anya Kochoff, Monster-in-law follows aspiring fashion designer Charlie (Lopez) who must confront her mother-in-law, played by Fonda, who will do whatever it takes to save her relationship with her son ruin. The film marked Fonda’s return to cinema after a 15-year absence since the release of Stanley & Iris in 1990.

The comedy also starred Michael Vartan, Wanda Sykes, Adam Scott, Monet Mazur, Annie Parisse, Will Arnett, Elaine Stritch and Stephen Dunham. According to IMDB, Monster-in-Law had a budget of $43 million and has earned more than $155 million worldwide.

While appearing on the daytime talk show to promote her latest movie, Moving On with Lily Tomlin, Fonda also reminisced about filming Barbarella and shared what happened behind the scenes in the opening scene, in which she did a striptease in space might.

“I hate being naked in front of anyone. I was drunk,” she said. “My husband [director Roger Vadim] had promised me that my various private parts would be covered by the titles of the film – he lied, he didn’t really.”

Fonda continued: “Just before the end of this horrific experience, a bat flew between me and the camera. The next day we had to do it all over again. We didn’t know this had happened until we saw the rushes. So I had to do it all over again with a hangover.”
