A painting by Amazonian artist Mady Benzecry was placed on the door of the First Lady’s office

The First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, shared a new artwork for the Planalto Palace this Friday (Jan. 13, 2023). The painting by Amazonian artist Mady Benzecry (19332003) was placed at the entrance to the office of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) wife.

“More colors and Brazilian at Planalto Palace! This work by Amazonian artist Mady Benzecry, depicting the strength of female origins, is now on display at the entrance to my office. Inspiration to work hard to appreciate Brazilian culture,” Janja wrote on her Instagram profile.

Mady Benoliel Benzecry was born on February 19, 1933 in Manaus to a traditional Amazonian family of Moroccan Jewish descent, Pazuello and Benoliel.

Benzecry moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 30. She married the woodcarver Eugênio Carlos Batista from Pernambuco. Together they held several exhibitions with works signed “Batista and Mady”. The couple also had 2 children: Jacob Elias Benzecry and Norma Nellie.

The visual artist was inspired by popular art and used rich colors.

She also published 2 volumes of poetry: Of all crepuscles (1964) and Sarandalhas (1967). Both were illustrated by another Amazonian artist, Moacir Andrade.

Mady Benzecry died on June 11, 2003 at the age of 70 in Rio de Janeiro.
