Japan: A volcanic eruption in the southwest of the archipelago

Shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, a volcano erupted on an island southwest of Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

The eruption of Mount Otake on Suwanose Island late Sunday morning had caused no injuries or damage, according to authorities in Toshima township near the volcano.

No evacuation order was issued by officials in this city in Kagoshima Prefecture. However, the JMA urged the local population “not to enter the danger zone” as there was a risk of large stones being thrown out within a radius of more than a kilometer.

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is one of the countries with the most frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.

According to the latest report, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula (central Japan) on January 1, killing 215 people.
