Authorities in Tokyo, Japan, conducted a missile evacuation exercise on Monday (6) to help residents prepare amid growing concerns over North Korea’s ballistic missile test launches.
Around 60 residents took part in the exercise, with one of the groups simulating an evacuation scenario in a subway station.
Participants gathered on the ground floor of Nerima station before being led by local authorities to the lower level, where the group squatted and covered their heads.
Mutsumi Takahashi, an official with Tokyo’s disaster prevention department, told reporters that the drill was held due to increasing demands from the government amid an increase in the number of missiles fired since last year.
These exercises should continue to educate residents about what to do if a launch lands or passes over Japan, he added.
North Korea has nuclear weapons and has regularly fired various types of weapons, from shortrange rockets and cruise missiles to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with a range that could potentially reach the U.S. mainland.
The country fired 59 missiles in 2022 and most recently fired two shortrange ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast on September 13 while its leader Kim Jong Un was on an official visit to Russia.
