Japan warned of the risk of a “severe tsunami” on the country's west coast after earthquakes were recorded this Monday (1). According to the Japanese Meteorological Service, the strongest quake had a magnitude of 7.6.
According to the weather service, waves up to 5 meters high could hit the peninsular region. In other regions, still on the west coast, waves of up to 3 meters can occur.
Public television NHK interrupted broadcasts and warned people to leave risk areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to stay in safe shelters until the warning is lifted.
The epicenter of the earthquake was registered on the Noto Peninsula at around 4:10 p.m. local time. (4:10 a.m., in Brasília).
According to NHK, waves of 1.20 meters were recorded in Wajima, a few kilometers from the epicenter of the quake. No damage was recorded as of the last update of this report.
South Korea also warned that the country's west coast could face sea level rise following the earthquake in Japan.
