Jason Momoa to Star in Minecraft Movie at Warner Bros.

From the watery kingdom of Atlantis to the dangerous deserts of Arrakis, Variety has confirmed Jason Momoa could journey into the video game world of Minecraft for Warner Bros.

The ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Dune’ star is in talks to star in a live-action film based on the hugely popular Minecraft video game, which has sold more than 238 million copies since its release in 2011 is the best-selling game of all time.

Jared Hess, known as the director of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and more, will direct the film. Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, and Jill Messick will be credited posthumously for working on the film before her death in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts will be executive producers. Mojang Studios, the Swedish video game developer behind Minecraft, will produce via Lydia Winters and Vu Bui.

Minecraft was launched in 2011 and immediately became a worldwide hit. Players can create their own 3D worlds with colorful blocks by mining materials and crafting items. In 2021 there were nearly 140 million monthly users and the game has been brought to multiple video game systems, received spinoffs and won many awards over the years. Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios for $2.5 billion in 2014, in what was one of the first major acquisitions by video game developers.

A Minecraft movie has been in the works for years, with Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney and Peter Sollett in talks to direct. Eventually, Steve Carell was to star in a film adaptation.

Next up for Momoa is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, slated for March 17, 2023, and he’s revving his engine for Fast and Furious 10.

News of the film was first reported by the ankler.
