His career has already spanned projects like Stargate, Conan the Barbarian, Game of Thrones, DC Comics, Dune and The Fast and Furious – and now Jason Momoa is adding another big franchise to his already impressive resume: Minecraft.

The Aquaman actor is in final negotiations to star in a live-action adaptation of Mojang Studios’ hugely popular and hit world-building game, and Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite, is currently in charge of directing. The ankler broke the news first, which was then confirmed by multiple trades.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard news about movement in a Minecraft movie. News of this first broke nearly 10 years ago when Free Guy director Shawn Levy was the first to join, followed by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney and most recently Peter Sollett, director of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. But now it’s Hess and Momoa — and we have no idea what the hell that could even look like.

Of course, Momoa can pull off practically anything. He first rose to prominence on the hit series Baywatch and had a number of hit TV shows, including a long stint on Stargate: Atlantis, before making his breakthrough role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones. He was then cast by Zack Snyder as Aquaman for Justice League (a character who’s still going strong as an Aquaman sequel is set to debut next year), played a key role in that year’s award-winning hit Dune, and was recently cast as the new villain in the upcoming one 10.Fast and Furious. He also appears on the Apple TV+ show See and from time to time in smaller, character-based films like The Bad Batch (not this one) and Netflix’s Sweet Girl.

All of this being said, while it’s almost impossible to imagine Momoa in the world of Minecraft, especially from the guy who made Napoleon Dynamite, it just might work. Usually it does for him. On the other hand, we’re sure that Levy, McElhenney, and Sollett all probably thought they were also going to launch the hit games franchise.
